Road safety - speed checks: Outline

Speed contributes to 3,000 deaths and 36,000 serious injuries on Britain's roads each year.

About two-thirds of all accidents in which people are killed or seriously injured happen on built up roads where the speed limit is 40 mph or less.

At 35mph you are twice as likely to kill someone as you are at 30 mph. Should a pedestrian be hit at 35mph, the force of the impact increases by over a third (36%), making injuries far more serious and death more likely.

No one sets out to become involved in a collision. However, considering the appropriate speed on a particular road at that time can reduce your involvement in a collision.
