Walking at Chasewater

James and Orchid

Chasewater Country Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means more of our rare heathland habitat is protected by law, so it must be managed to conserve its wildlife and habitats.

Chasewater covers a total of 300 hectares. Paths around the site go across a variety of terrain, allowing you to view a wide range of habitats. During certain times of the year we ask that you exercise caution when walking and maintain a healthy distance from sensitive areas of the site.

If you enjoy walking but would like some guidance around the site then please join one of our quarterly guided walks, the walks are suitable for all ages and abilities. The length and difficulty of the walk is dictated by the group or groups on the day. Dogs are welcome on leads. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

Please respect our wildlife

Chasewater DeerWe are very lucky at Chasewater; the site is regularly grazed by a herd of red deer. They are used to the presence of people but please be aware they are wild animals and should be treated with respect at all times. Keep your distance, walk slowly and put any dogs on leads.

Some areas of the site are also naturally grazed by cattle during the year. These areas are fenced but the public footpath runs through the area. Exercise caution when walking through these areas and keep any dogs on leads.

The nesting season for birds is traditionally between March and September. Please adhere to on site signage during these periods and help us protect our very special wildlife.

During your visit to Chasewater Country Park please follow The Countryside Code and follow our crucial rule 'take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints'.

Chasewater dam improvements

Please note, the whole of the reservoir bed is out of bounds for everyone, including dogs, while the improvements to Chasewater's eastern dam take place.  This is because the mud is dangerous and could be far deeper than it appears.
