International Women's Day 2009

Published on Tuesday 7th April 2009

The International Women's day working group

Each year, International Women’s Day is celebrated by women all over the world on 8 March. To mark the occasion, International Women’s Day Working Group is hosting three events across the district.

There will be loads going on with each event including a pamper corner, health corner, IT corner, political corner, craft corner, and a bra bank corner - so women can donate their old bras to charity. There will also be a raffle, tombola, cakes and refreshments and much more.

Lucie Broad, member of International Women's Day Working Group and Community Development Worker for Lichfield District Council, said: "We hope lots of women will come along to these events. They will be great opportunities for the community to get together to enjoy a thought provoking and fun day. This year is especially poignant to us, as we have dedicated the celebrations to North Lichfield Initiative volunteer, Gill Balmond, who died recently and is really missed."

Liz Bacon, member of International Women's Day Working Group and Youth Worker for Staffordshire Youth Service, added: "In today's society, women have even more jobs to juggle, and all too often their hard work goes by unrecognised and unrewarded. So, if you are a local woman, put some time aside and come and get a boost at one of these events.

"We're extending a special invitation to the lovely women of Burntwood to come along to the Lichfield event, which is why we've organised free transport. If you live in Burntwood and would like to come to the celebrations at Nether Stowe Youth Centre, a mini bus will be leaving Burntwood Youth Centre, on Cherry Close, at 1,30pm and 2.30pm and returning at 5pm ."

The International Women's Day events cost just 50p, and all the money raised will go to charity. Under 11 year-olds should be supervised by someone 16 years or older.

International Women's Day Working Group is made up of local agencies including: Staffordshire Youth Service, North Lichfield Initiative, Lichfield District Council, Lichfield and District Community and Voluntary Sector Support, Pathway Project, Adult and Community Learning Service, HomeZone Living, South Staffordshire College , Inde One and local volunteers.
