Councillor John Wilks handed over his title of Chairman to the former Vice Chair - Councillor Joseph Powell – on Tuesday 12 May.

Cllr Joseph Powell was sworn in as the Chairman of Lichfield District Council, and Cllr Barry Diggle was sworn in as Vice Chair, at Annual Council held in the Council Chamber at District Council House.

As the new Chairman, Cllr Powell will travel the length and breadth of the district, and the region, representing Lichfield District at numerous occasions - including royal visits, community events and charity functions. He will also chair council meetings and work throughout the year to raise money for charity.

Of his year in office, Councillor Joseph Powell, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, said: "I am looking forward to a busy year in my role as Chairman and will do my best to represent the district. It is a great honour and I am sure it will be very rewarding. The two charities I am supporting are Young Carers Association (Lichfield Branch) and Rocklands Special School in Lichfield."

Councillor John Wilks, Chairman of Lichfield District Council from May 2008 to May 2009, said: "This has been a year to remember and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Of the hundreds of events and places I visited officially, the National Arboretum especially stands out in my mind. The moving tribute to service men that have died since the Second World War has never failed to impress and humble me.

It is a great honour to have such a tribute in our district and it should be seen by everyone.

"I am so grateful to everyone for supporting my charities and through their generosity we have raised over £5,600 for St Giles Hospice and County Air Ambulance. I understand this is something of a new record for the council and would like to thank everyone who gave donations and supported the various charitable events - such as the Chairman's Ball, St Giles Fashion Show, and Chase Harriers' annual race at Chasewater Country Park."
