Summer Celebration
Published on Thursday, 5th July 2012
Despite the rain, more than 200 people put on their wellies and raincoats and headed down to Mile Oak Recreation Ground to enjoy this year’s Summer Celebration, which took place in June
Local agencies and groups worked together to host a celebratory event, which featured games, stalls, performances and activities on 16 June 2012.
The Summer Celebration launched with an opening ceremony, led by children from Longwood Primary School holding a banner and an Olympic-style Torch they had made. They were followed by members from Mile Oak Sea Scouts and local dance groups, as well as pupils from Millfield Primary School who paraded their Olympic-inspired torches they had made.
Unfortunately the football tournament was cancelled because of the weather, but other activities, including BMXing, go-karts, face painting and Peel puppet shows, went ahead.Step by Step Dance group and Phoenix Dance Studio performed throughout the day, and games and refreshments were provided by Mile Oak Sea Scouts and St Paul's Church.
Councillor Colin Greatorex, Cabinet Member for Community and Organisational Development, said: "It was such a shame that it rained on the day. However, it did not stop lots of people from enjoying this special community celebration. The event was only possible thanks to all the people that volunteered their time and energy to make it a brilliant day."
The main raffle prize of a signed photo of Manchester United and England football player, Chris Smalling, was won by Belinda Hart.
The Summer Celebration was funded by Lichfield District Council, Bromford Living and Fazeley Town Council.
The groups and agencies that helped to organise the event included: Lichfield District Council, Fazeley Town Council, Bromford Living, Mile Oak Sea Scouts, Mazeley Youth Club, Fazeley and District Initiative, St Paul's Church, Flamingo Entertainment, Tamworth Roundtable and Mazeley Wheels.
