What vehicle licence do I need?

A hackney carriage licence is issued to the proprietor/owner of a vehicle. It permits a vehicle to use taxi ranks where available, and ply for hire.

A private hire licence is issued to the proprietor/owner of a vehicle. It allows a vehicle to be used as a pre-booked private hire vehicle.

To apply for a licence, you will need to download and complete an application form for a proprietor's licence

Do I need a driver's licensce

Hackney carriages and private hire vehicles can only be driven by appropriately licensed drivers. You can get a licence that allows drivers to drive both hackney carriage and private hire vehicles.

We will only grant a licence to people we consider are 'fit and proper' persons.

To do this we carrry out/require a number of checks, including an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure, Group Two medical, and a driving licence check.

If you are applying for the first time, you will need to fill out an application for the grant of a licence, if you are renewing an existing application, you will need to fill out an application for a renewal of a licence.

You must provide two passport photographs with your application.
