Scrap metal licences
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, all scrap metal dealers, motor salvage operators and vehicle dismantlers - either based on a site or mobile/itinerant collectors - need a licence to trade.
There are two types of licence:
Site licence - Fee £377
If you wish to run a scrap metal dealership on a fixed site, you will need a licence and you will need to have a site manager named for each site. The licence allows the licensee to transport scrap metal to and from the licensed site from any local authority area.
Licences last for three years and must be renewed - trading without a licence is a criminal offence. To apply, fill in our application form for a scrap metal dealers licence.
Collector’s licence - Fee £248
If you wish to collect scrap metal you will need a licence. The licence allows collectors to operate in the area of the issuing local authority. It does not allow the collector to operate in any other local authority area, so you will need separate licences issued by the councils responsible for each of the areas you wish to operate in. The licence does not authorise you to operate a site - to do so you will need a site licence (see above) from the relevant local authority.
