Councillors officially open newly refurbished facilities at Burntwood Leisure Centre

BLC improvements ribbon cutting at new gym1

Cllr Bob Awty, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, along with Cllr David Leytham, joined directors from Freedom Leisure to formally cut the ribbon to the newly refurbished leisure centre today (Thursday 31 January).

The council’s leisure partner, Freedom Leisure, which committed to improvements at the centre upon taking over operations in February 2018 are pleased to finally be unveiling the new facilities after a year of work.

In patnership with Lichfield District Council, the not-for-profit leisure trust invested £1.6 million in modernising the building to make it more energy efficient and lessen its environmental impact, in a bid to reduce C02 by 392 tonnes a year, while also greatly improving the facilities on offer.

Highlights include a brand new 70-station gym, a new state-of-the-art MyRide cycling studio; offering instructor led and virtual sessions, a new group exercise studio, a new Freedom Café serving Costa Coffee, and in direct response to customer feedback – a new sauna and steam room, opening in a few weeks’ time.

Of the newly refurbished centre, Freedom Leisure’s Managing Director, Ivan Horsfall-Turner, said:

“We’re delighted to unveil this extremely high-spec centre which features one of the best gyms in the area and a cycling studio to rival the top boutique studios in London!

“Both Lichfield District Council and ourselves are committed to a healthy, active Lichfield and local facilities such as these are crucial in supporting local residents – this centre is so much more than a gym, with hundreds of ways to be active and play sport all under one roof in a friendly, welcoming environment. We have something for all ages and abilities.”

Cllr Bob Awty, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, said:

“I was delighted to help cut the ribbon to officially launch Burntwood Leisure Centre’s improvements. The refurbished centre looks great, and we’re all so pleased that local people will benefit from the new state-of-the-art equipment and features it has to offer.”

To showcase the new facilities, the leisure centre team is inviting locals to an open day on Saturday 2 February. It will feature free use of the gym, free taster group exercise classes, swimming for just £1 and great membership offers available throughout the day.
