Good Neighbour Scheme for Whittington and Fisherwick

Whittington and Fisherwick is one of three areas in Staffordshire where a Good Neighbour Scheme is being piloted, the others being Baswich in Stafford and Blake in Cannock. This work is being funded by the County Council with the initiative being led by the Community Council of Staffordshire and supported by Lichfield District voluntary and statutory agencies.

Practical help can make all the difference to older people – whether it’s collecting a pension or a repeat prescription, walking the dog, food shopping, light gardening or changing a light bulb.

Often family members might live too far away to visit regularly so Staffordshire Good Neighbour Schemes aim to provide valuable company and friendship as well as making sure the older person is safe and well. It’s a way of helping people stay independent whilst providing friendly, social contact and making sure they’re safe and well.

This will be done through identifying members (older people and vulnerable adults) who require low level support, as identified above and matching them with helpers (volunteers) who are local residents with the appropriate skills and knowledge.

Membership is free! Helpers will be able to give as much time as they want, when they want; will be well supported with reasonable expenses being covered.

By developing existing social networks and using existing community resources to enable residents to help each other and take advantage of opportunities to meet other local residents through social activities or shared interests, it is hoped that the Staffordshire Good Neighbour Scheme model will improve health and community wellbeing and reduce the isolation experienced by many older people.
