Noise from scrap metal collectors
If you notice a scrap metal collector advertising their trade by playing a recording through a loudspeaker, then please report it to us via our online noise pollution report form.
Please make sure you provide the registration number, make, model and colour of the vehicle, as well as the time and date that you heard them sounding from the speaker. Please note that without this information we will be unable to get the registered keeper's details and will be unable to take action.
The use of a loudspeaker while driving along the street is restricted and to use them for this purpose is potentially a criminal offence.
Any vehicle used for the purpose of collecting scrap metal needs to have a waste carriers licence issued by the Environment Agency. They also need to register as a scrap metal dealer with Staffordshire County Council's Licensing Team.
If you do leave scrap metal for a scrap metal collector, you should also note that you have a duty of care to make sure anyone who collects waste from you is a registered waste carrier. If you don't and any waste which is dumped illegally is traced back to you, you could be liable for a fine of up to £5,000.
