About dead animals we pick up
We collect the remains of dead animals from the roadside and other publicly accessible areas.
We know that sadly some of the animals we pick up are well-loved family pets. When we collect a domestic animal we will, whenever possible, hand it over to a local veterinary practice. If we cannot take it to a vet we will take it back to the council depot and keep it for up to 48 hours.
If it is in an incredibly poor state, we may dispose of it immediately.
Locating the owners
If we leave an animal off with a vet they will attempt to locate the owner. If we take it back to the depot, we will check the animal's collar and scan for a microchip. If we find a microchip we will access the national database. If we find the owner, we will contact them and offer them the opportunity to collect their pet.
After 48 hours we will dispose of any uncollected pets in an environmentally friendly manner.
