St John's Hospital, Lichfield
The Accommodation at St John’s is spread over two sites:
- St John’s Without the Barrs
- St John’s in the Close
To qualify for the right to residency applicants should be retired, aged 60 or above be capable of independent living and ideally live within the Lichfield Diocese. They should have the support of a Parish priest and be prepared to endorse the Christian heritage of St John’s and the benefits of community living.
The original and ancient Hospital of St. John Baptist was built by Bishop Roger de Clinton, in 1135, as a pilgrim hostel and as a place of healing and hospitality. To this was added a range of Almshouses and the Priory Hall was converted to a Master’s House in 1495 by Bishop William Smyth, providing for the needs of 13 elderly men who had fallen upon hard times, through no fault of their own. Today this principal of hospitality is continued with accommodation for both single men and married couples in two establishments, Without the Barrs and Within the Close.
At St. John’s Without the Barrs we have 4 two bedroom flats and 4 one bedroom flats suitable for married couples and one bedroom flats, suitable only for a single man.
The general requirement is that potential residents are retired single men or married couples, able to live independently, who are members of the Anglican Church and reside in the Diocese of Lichfield. Single ladies are not able to apply. If there are no applicants from the diocese, when a flat is vacant, then we may be allowed to invite applicants from other dioceses. All the accommodation at St. John’s has been modernised to a high standard and the apartments and common areas are regularly re-decorated.
We have Warden/Caretaker teams on both sites and each flat has its communication alarm. The Wardens and the Master exercise an oversight of care available to all residents.
A suitable maintenance charge is levied in conjunction with the Local Authority Rent Officer. However the Hospital Trustees would not wish anyone, otherwise suitable, to feel unable to apply because of financial difficulties.
