Moving here? A quick guide

Welcome to Lichfield District - we hope you enjoy living here. We've designed this section to help you get to grips with local services and the key things you need to do to get up and running in your new home. The top three things we recommend you do first include:

  • tell us you have arrived, so we can set up your council tax
  • register to vote at your new address
  • find out when your bin is collected

To find out more below:

 Council tax

If you are moving into the district, it's very important that you let us know as soon as possible, so we can set up your council tax.

You can either email the team at revenues@lichfielddc.gov.uk, or call the team on 01543 308999 to tell us. We'll need your new address and the date you moved in. Find out more.

Before you call us ...

So you don't waste time calling us, you might want to double check (particularly if you are moving into a rural area) that your home is in Lichfield District. To do this visit the Valuation Office Agency website and enter your postcode.

Find out how much council tax you'll pay

If you want to know how much council tax you will pay, visit our property bands page.

For more information on council tax, visit our council tax section.

About your bins - ordering new bins, collections dates and more

We provide an fortnightly collection of recycling (blue bin) and non-recyclable household waste (black bin).

We also provide a fortnightly collection of garden waste for a charge of £36 per year. If you would like to sign up to receive a garden waste collection service, visit www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/mygardenbin

To find out about when your bin is collection, what to put in each bin, how to order new or replacement bins for your new home, and more, visit our 'moving here - a guide to your bins'.

Register to vote at your new address

If you have recently moved into or within Lichfield District, you will need to register to vote. Register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

It only takes five minutes. You'll need your National Insurance Number and date of birth to hand. If you know someone who needs to register but who hasn't got access to the internet, please contact our elections team on 01543 308125.

What is IER?

All voters need to register individually, rather than as a household. Find out more about Individual Electoral Registration.

Can I vote by post or proxy?

If you can't make it to the polling station on election day, you can either register to vote by post or ask someone to vote on your behalf, via a proxy vote.

The electoral register

The electoral register or electoral roll is a record of everyone who is registered to vote in an election. The Electoral Registration Officer makes and keeps two versions of the electoral register - the full register and the open register. The full electoral register lists everyone who is entitled to vote. The law says who can have a copy of the full register and what they can use it for.

The open register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose. You can opt out of your details appearing on the open register. If you want to opt out, please contact:
