Annual electoral registration canvass

We send a canvass communication to every household in the district every year. We do this to check the details of everyone at each property who is 16 years or above, and is currently on the electoral register

Because 2021's canvass is taking place during the coronavirus pandemic, we are working to ensure it takes account of public health guidelines, including the continued importance of social distancing. We are also encouraging people to choose to change their vote to a postal vote, although this remains their choice. 

This year canvass communication letters were sent to all households by the end of August 2021. There are two types of letter depending on if a response is or isn't required. We use an automated service to make it easier for you to respond by using your telephone, text message or internet if your details remain the same, or by internet if there are any changes to be made.

We will always need a response if there is a change to your household information, including adding or deleting people. From the information you provide the council can invite other residents, including any 16 and 17 year olds who are not already registered, to register to vote. We send invitations to register at monthly intervals by email or by post.

  • If there are no changes to your household and a response is asked for in the letter, please call freephone 0800 197 9871 or text NOCHANGE, followed by the security code on the letter, to 80212 (normal provider rates apply). You can also notify us online. You will need the security code on your letter.
  • If there are changes to your household, for example someone has moved in, you've moved house, or someone has turned 16, you can notify us online . You will need the security code on your letter.

Where a response is asked for and we do not receive one we will send a reminder canvass form in September, and will make further follow ups by telephone during November.

Don't forget

Anyone who is new to the household, or has just turned 18, will also need to register to vote on gov.uk. This only takes a few minutes - you will need your NI number ready.

The revised register will be published 1 December 2021. Changes can still be made using the automated service until 31 December 2021. After that you can still let us know of any changes by telephone or email and monthly updates to the register are produced throughout 2022, until such time as we begin our next annual canvass.
