Coronavirus (COVID-19): Public health advice

Symptoms

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a type of coronavirus.

The symptoms are:

  • a continuous cough
  • a high temperature (of 37.8 degrees Celsius or more)
  • shortness of breath
  • anosmia (loss of or a change in the normal sense of smell/taste)

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

If you think you may have the symptoms of COVID-19 you must self-isolate immediately - please also go to NHS 111 online resource.

Please continue to follow advice from Public Health England and the NHS.

Testing for coronavirus

If you are showing coronavirus symptoms you are now eligible to book a swab test to find out if you have the virus.

If you know anybody in England or Wales without internet access, a new telephone service is available to book - just tell them to dial 119.
