Council tax

Due to the impact of the coronavirus, we know some people may be under increased financial hardship and may struggle to pay their council tax on time.

Council tax hardship fund

In line with the government’s budget announcement in March, we are rolling out the council tax hardship fund to support our most vulnerable households impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

We will be using the majority of this hardship funding to provide residents in need with up to £150 off their council tax bills over this financial year (2020-21). We will apply this reduction automatically and are sending a new council tax bill to the 1,630 households that were eligible for the hardship fund as of 1 April 2020. This will show as COVID-19 discretionary reduction on your bill.

We have also set aside a portion of the funding for any new claims we may receive. This is in addition to existing council tax support scheme mentioned below.

Coucil tax support

If you are on a low income you may be eligible for some help to pay your council tax. This is called council tax support. You will need to apply to us, and we will assess how much help you could get based on your income, capital and who else lives in your home.

Other options if you do not qualify for support

If you are not eligible for council tax support, but need some assistance temporarily while your income is disrupted, you can ask us for one of the following options:

Option 1

If you pay your council tax in ten instalments between April and January, you can spread the year's charge over 12 months from April 2020 to March 2021. This will mean your monthly payments will go down.

Option 2

If you pay your council tax in ten instalments between April and January, you can delay it by two months and pay your ten instalments between June 2020 and March 2021.

Option 3

If you pay your council tax in ten instalments between April and January, you could change it to pay by eight monthly instalments between June 2020 and January 2021. This will mean your monthly payments would go up.

If you would like us to apply for any of the above options, please email our revenues team or call us on 01543 308900.

Please tell us your council tax reference number if you do contact us.

Reminder notices

We will not be issuing any reminder notices in April. However, it is really important that you continue to pay your council tax to support vital council services.
