Deadline coming up for business grant applications

Lichfield District Council is urging businesses that may be eligible for a discretionary business grant or a small business grant to take action now, as the deadline to apply is 24 August 2020.

Businesses across Lichfield District have just under two weeks to apply for a share of government money aimed at helping those whose trade has been badly hit by coronavirus.

In April, Lichfield District Council was allocated £951,000 from the government’s discretionary business grants scheme, to enable grants to be paid to a number of businesses that are struggling to survive the conditions due to loss of income and fixed property costs.

The application period for these grants is set to come to an end on Monday 24 August. So far the council has paid out £410,000 to 82 district businesses.

The scheme is aimed at businesses whose income have been hit, as they are unable to open or because they are still affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

To benefit more businesses, the council is opening up the £5,000 grant scheme to local public event organisers and traders who work from home and who also host events locally or bring their goods to trade at local events.

The district council is also calling for businesses that haven’t yet claimed from the much larger pot of funding under the small business grant or the retail, leisure and hospitality grant to do so now.

The scheme opened in April and will also be closing on 24 August. Businesses receiving small business rates relief or smaller businesses receiving the retail rates holiday as of 11 March 2020 are generally eligible for a grant of £10,000 or £25,000. The council has already paid over £18 million to more than 1,500 businesses across the district.

Councillor Liz Little, Cabinet Member for Major Projects & Economic Development, said:

“With the deadline fast approaching, we’re urging all local businesses who may be eligible but are yet to apply for a grant to take action now.

“We are also keen to get the message out to local event organisers or traders who work from home that they may now be eligible for a discretionary business grant.

“It’s vital that businesses who haven’t claimed yet to double check to see if they are eligible and make sure they apply for a grant before it’s too late.”
