Pay your rent

Paying rent might not be the most exciting part of moving in, but it is one of the most important.

Here's how it works:

  • If you get Housing Benefit or Universal Credit, it’s usually paid directly to Lichfield District Council.
  • If not, you’ll need to pay it yourself either by setting up a direct debit (wihch we advise so you'll never miss a payment), or you can pay online.
  • Details of how to pay will be explained when you move in – and we’ll make it as simple as possible.

If you're not sure whether your rent is being paid automatically, ask your housing officer.

What if you miss a payment?

We understand things can go wrong sometimes. Don’t panic – here’s what usually happens:

Missed one payment?

  • You’ll get a letter and a visit to talk things through.
  • A payment plan can be arranged to help get things back on track.

Missed two?

  • We’ll need to follow up with another visit and an official warning.

Missed three?

  • A formal notice may be served and, if things can’t be resolved, eviction proceedings may begin.

But, and this is important, support is available throughout. We can help with budgeting, benefit advice, and finding a way forward. Please talk to us early if you are struggling to pay.
