Areas Affected
- Lichfield District wide
Overview
Lichfield District Council is inviting residents to share their ideas for the creation of six new nature reserves within existing open spaces across the district. These reserves will enhance local biodiversity while ensuring spaces remain welcoming and accessible for people.
Proposed sites
-
Land off Eastern Avenue (west of Curborough Road, opposite Stychbrook Park)
-
Land off Coulter Lane
-
Darnford Park
-
Saddlers Park
-
Shortbutts Park
-
York Close Woodland
What is planned
The nature reserves will balance the needs of wildlife and visitors by introducing:
-
Areas of long grass rich in wildflowers and pollinators
-
Short grass zones for easy access and walking routes
-
Woodland management through selective thinning to help mature trees flourish
-
Wildlife-friendly features such as bee banks, scrapes, hedgehog shelters, and ponds
Each site will be managed for at least 30 years, funded through developer contributions that offset biodiversity impacts of new developments. Day-to-day management will be delivered by Lichfield West Midlands Traded Services (LWM), with oversight retained by the council.
Councillor Phil Whitehouse, Cabinet Member for Operational Services, Parks & Waste, said:
“We’re really excited about these plans, which are about adding another feature to open spaces in Lichfield District that create better habitats for wildlife.”
This project forms part of the council’s Biodiversity Gain Sites programme, ensuring long-term protection and enhancement of green spaces.
