Food poisoning prevention advice

Symptoms of food poisoning

The symptoms of food poisoning vary depending on the bacteria which has caused the illness, however, common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea

These symptoms can occur anywhere between ten minutes and several weeks from the time of eating contaminated food, so it may not be the last thing you ate which caused the illness (usually 2 to 5 days for Campylobacter and 12 to 72 hours for Salmonella).

If you suspect you may have food poisoning it is very important that you see your doctor as soon as possible so the type of bacteria which has made you ill can be identified.

Your doctor should notify our environmental health team on your behalf, and we may contact you to do a questionnaire about your diet prior to your illness.

If you suspect you have food poisoning as a result of a visit to a local food business (restaurant or cafe etc) you can make a food poisoning complaint.
