Keeping safe

As a licensed driver you are working alone with strangers, sometimes at night and many of you carry cash. These factors can make you vulnerable.

This information is to help you think about things you can do to keep yourself safe.

Keep your money and possessions safe
  • Limit the amount of cash you carry and avoid leaving it around the central console; it is an easy target for a thief.
  • Consider using an app or card machine to take payments, where possible.
  • Keep your mobile phone safe and out of reach from passengers.
Vehicle condition
  • Always make sure your vehicle is in good condition so that is not likely to break down and can be relied on for your shift.
  • We recommend that you carry out a walkaround vehicle inspection before you start your work. This will make sure you are alerted to any problems. It is particularly important to check that your tyres have a good tread depth, all the lights are working correctly and all seatbelts are working and available for use.
Fare disputes
  • Where appropriate, make sure you have agreed the fare before you set off to reduce the risk of a dispute at the end of the journey, especially if the journey will end in an isolated or rural area.
  • Explain the route you are taking if you have to go a longer way to avoid road works, for example.
  • Do not attempt to chase a passenger who leaves owing you the fare. Your safety is more important.
Top tips
  • Trust your instincts – you have the right to refuse a passenger if you think they may present a risk to you.
  • If you are threatened, call 999 immediately. Do not risk your personal safety.
  • Report any incidents where you felt threatened or were abused to the police. Whilst they may not always be able to take action, it helps build a picture of any potential issues and direct resources.
  • Use your communication skills to de-escalate situations where possible. Try to remain professional and calm and avoid raising your voice.
