We are attempting to trace the relatives of 20 fallen World War heroes following a proposal that streets on a new housing development be named after them.
Lichfield City Council has suggested that 18 streets at a new housing development off Cricket Lane are named in honour of men whose names are commemorated in the Garden of Remembrance.
Relatives of the servicemen are being sought by Lichfield District Council to inform them of the proposal and, where possible, gain consent to use their names.
The names of the men who served in World War I are A.W. Banton, T.A. Derry, T. Emery, A.R. Foster, E.E. Grant, E.H. Irwin, W. Jakeman, G.W.J Lamb, A.J Macpherson, J.C.J Nicholls, J.G Payne, R. Ridgway, F. Sedgwick and W.H. Thorneloe.
The names of the men who served in World War II are G.W. Asbridge, J. Brace, E.W. Cook, S. Humphries, J.A. Payne and A. Sedgwick.
The suggested street names are Asbridge Way, Emery Crescent, Grant Drive, Sedgwick Street, Derry Road, Foster Close, Cook Lane, Jakeman Drive, Irwin Avenue, Humphries Lane, Brace Road, Lamb Close, Macpherson Drive, Banton Croft, Nicholls Avenue, Payne Close, Thorneloe Way and Ridgway Croft.
Councillor Rob Strachan, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Commissioning, said:
“We feel it is fitting to honour the families who sacrificed during both World Wars by naming new streets after their loved ones who paid the ultimate price.
“We need to give any of the serviceman’s relatives the opportunity to tell us if they would rather the names are not used. So, if you are a descendant of any of the men whose names have been chosen, please get in touch to tell us if you give your consent.”
If you are a relative of any of the men, please contact Katie Badger, GIS Officer, by calling 01543 308763 or emailing addresses@lichfielddc.gov.uk by 5pm pm on 17 March.
