The roll out of food waste collections across Lichfield District & Tamworth Borough are set to launch later this year due to delay in the delivery of the food waste trucks required for the service.
A spokesperson from the Joint Waste Service confirmed: “We have taken the decision to delay the launch of our new food waste collection service due to delays in the delivery of specialist collection vehicles, following a significant national increase in demand.
“We had been preparing to launch the service on 30 March 2026, with vehicles ordered, caddies ready for delivery and staff recruited and trained. We had been regularly seeking updates from our supplier and had every expectation that delivery would be on schedule. However, we have now received late notice that, due to unprecedented national demand, the vehicles required to operate the service will now not be delivered in time for launch.
“When we first learned of the delay, we explored interim vehicle hire options, but these could not be guaranteed long-term, so we agreed to wait until we have more certainty.
“As a joint waste service, we remain fully committed to introducing food waste collections in 2026 and are working closely with our supplier to confirm revised delivery dates. We will provide a further update once a new timetable is agreed. We are very grateful to residents for their understanding and for taking part in the service when it is rolled out.”
