Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet has backed the development of a new grant scheme to support businesses in restoring and enhancing historic shopfronts across the city centre.

The scheme will provide funding to support businesses in improving the appearance and quality of shopfronts, helping to protect Lichfield’s historic character while supporting a thriving local economy.

Funding for the programme has already been allocated through the council’s capital investment programme, with £900,000 set aside to support improvements over the next two years.

Councillor Richard Holland, Cabinet Member for High Street & Economic Development, said:
“Lichfield’s city centre is one of our greatest strengths, but we know some shopfronts no longer reflect the character we’re proud of.

“This scheme is about working with businesses to put that right. By offering financial support alongside clear guidance, we’re making it easier for businesses to invest with confidence and play their part in enhancing our high street.

“High-quality shopfronts don’t just improve how the city looks – they help attract visitors, increase footfall and support local businesses to grow.”

The scheme will support a range of improvements, including restoring traditional shopfront features, reinstating original architectural details, and upgrading signage and lighting.

Where possible, improvements may also support better accessibility, while respecting the constraints of historic buildings.

The scheme will prioritise independent businesses and heritage-led improvements within Lichfield city centre’s conservation area.

Alongside the grant scheme, the council is currently consulting on a new Heritage Shopfront Design Code, which will set clear, practical guidance on how shopfronts should look and feel in the future.

The consultation gives residents, businesses and stakeholders the opportunity to share their views and help shape the final design code before it is formally adopted.

Councillor Holland added: “This is about more than individual shopfronts – it’s about taking pride in our high street and protecting what makes Lichfield special.

“We want to hear from residents and businesses as part of the consultation, so we can make sure the final design code reflects what people value about our city.”

The scheme forms part of the council’s wider investment in Lichfield city centre, supporting local businesses, improving the look and feel of key streets, and strengthening the district’s long-term economic future.

Further details on how businesses can apply for the grant scheme will be shared as the programme is developed.
