Lichfield District has no scheduled elections this May because it’s a normal fallow year in our four‑year election cycle

This year is what’s known as a fallow year for Lichfield District Council which means we don't have any scheduled elections taking place on 7 May. This is part of the normal local election cycle. We elect all our 47 councillors every four years.

You may see/have seen information online about elections happening for neighbouring councils and wonder why there’s nothing about elections in our area. This is completely normal, as different areas vote in different years.

As there are presently no scheduled elections in our polling area, we are not currently recruiting staff to assist with poll work. However, you may complete our online form to express an interest to be considered at a later date to work at a polling station as a Poll Clerk or Presiding Officer, assist with postal vote opening, as an Overnight Verification Assistant, or as a Count Assistant.

Impacts of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) on our elections

The current plan is that there will be no district council elections in May 2026, in line with our four-year elections schedule. We may run elections not presently scheduled if a ward councillor vacancy arises or a referendum is called. Parish council elections will still take place, and elections will also be held for new shadow unitary councils in the lead up to LGR.

The shadow councils will operate alongside existing councils, preparing for the move to a new unitary system in Staffordshire. On 1 April 2028, the shadow councils will become the new unitary authorities, and existing county and district councils will be abolished, with all services transferring to the new bodies.

Until then, district and county councils will continue to deliver services as normal. Councillors elected in May 2023 (or since via by‑elections) will remain in post until April 2028. This extended term is intended to provide stability during the transition.
