What you can do
We recommend you contact the owner of the light before making a complaint. A neighbour may not even realise they are causing you a problem and letting them know may resolve the problem more quickly and lead to a better long term solution.
If you are comfortable to do so you could speak to them or send them a note. There is more information online on how to resolve a dispute yourself.
What is expected of residents?
Residents are expected to take reasonable steps to reduce the impact of light entering their property before we become involved. This may include:
- Closing curtains or blinds at night
- Installing blackout curtains or blinds where appropriate
We would generally expect these practical measures to be taken before determining whether the light is causing an unreasonable interference.
What can I do to control light nuisance?
If you have outdoor lights you should consider the potential impact on your neighbours.
- Make sure the lights are positioned and angled correctly so they are not shining into a neighbouring property
- Make sure lights are not excessively bright
- Make sure lights are not left on unnecessarily. If possible, use lights with a passive infra-red detector making sure they are correctly installed and aligned.
