Candles
Candles can create a warm and relaxing atmosphere, but they’re also a common cause of house fires when left unattended or placed too close to flammable items. Taking a few simple precautions can help you enjoy candles safely.
To reduce the risk of fire:
- Always place candles in a stable holder, on a heat-resistant surface.
- Keep candles away from flammable items, such as curtains, furniture, bedding, and decorations.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended – always extinguish them before leaving the room or going to sleep.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
- Consider using LED battery-operated candles – they give the same effect without the fire risk.
- Avoid using candles during power cuts – use torches or battery lights instead.
When using scented or decorative candles
- Don’t burn for more than the recommended time.
- Trim the wick to 5mm before each use to prevent large flames or soot build-up.
- Allow space above the candle – avoid shelves or enclosed areas that trap heat or smoke.
Stay protected
- Keep a working smoke alarm on every level of your home, and install a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a fuel-burning appliance, such as a boiler, wood burner, or open fire.
- Test your alarms regularly.
- Have an escape plan and make sure everyone in the household knows it.
- If a fire does start, get out, stay out, and call 999.
