At home

Take care with decorations and candles. Christmas lights, real trees, and candles all add festive charm — but they also increase the risk of fire.

  • never leave lit candles unattended
  • keep candles away from curtains and decorations
  • switch off fairy lights at night and when going out
  • check that any lights or decorations meet UK safety standards
  • view our project your home from fires resources for more great fire safety hints and tips.

Be mindful of Christmas presents. Gifts stacked under the tree may look festive, but if they’re visible from windows or doors, they can attract thieves.

  • keep presents out of sight from windows
  • don’t leave packaging outside that shows expensive items have been bought
  • secure sheds and garages where gifts might be stored
  • If you're going away for Christmas:
  • use timer switches for lights
  • ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home
  • avoid posting holiday plans or location updates on social media
