Historic buildings grant scheme
We run a small grant scheme called the historic buildings grant. This scheme aims to help with the cost of repairs to historic buildings and is now prioritised towards buildings at risk.
Eligible works
The main aim of historic building grants is to encourage comprehensive, high quality traditional repairs using materials which match the original historic fabric. Smaller scale schemes can be considered but only if any structural defects have first been satisfactorily addressed. Phased schemes may also be considered where large scale expensive repairs to particularly important buildings are involved.
It is less usual for interior works to be assisted although such work may be eligible if it results from structural repair to the exterior or is vital to the preservation of the structure.
Conversions, routine maintenance, the provision or renewal of services, alterations and redecoration are not eligible.
Level of grant
The normal level of assistance is 25% of eligible costs up to a maximum grant of £5000.
Higher rates may be awarded where we are satisfied that urgent and important repairs cannot be undertaken at the normal rate because of economic circumstances.
How do I apply?
Before making an application you are advised to first contact the Conservation Team to discuss eligibility. If a project is considered eligible (which may require a site visit by a conservation officer) an application form and accompanying guidance notes will be provided for completion.
Points to bear in mind
We expect work which we aid to be sympathetic to the character and importance of the buildings in question, and to be done to a standard which will ensure durability and value for money. We can provide full technical advice on these matters.
Do not start work before we have offered a grant unless you have obtained our written approval to do so. We do not pay grant for work which has already been carried out.
For all but simple and straightforward work, we would expect the involvement of a professional (a qualified architect or building surveyor) to produce a repair specification and schedule of work upon which to invite tenders (normally three) and subsequently to check work and be responsible for its certification.
You will not normally be eligible for grant unless you have owned the building for more than two years.
Historic England also runs a grant scheme for the repair of buildings of outstanding architectural or historic interest, this usually means Grade I or Grade II* buildings. Further information on funding schemes can be found on Historic England's website.
