How to prevent condensation damp

The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to reduce moisture, improve ventilation, and keep your home warm, dry and free from condensation damp and mould.

Below is some practical advice, along with links to further guidance and support.

Reduce moisture in your home

  • Open windows or use extractor fans when cooking or showering.
  • Cover pans when boiling and switch off the kettle after use.
  • Avoid using paraffin or gas heaters - they produce moisture.
  • Dry washing outside where possible, or in a closed bathroom with the window open and the fan on.
  • Don’t dry clothes directly on radiators.
  • Wipe down windows and windowsills daily to remove condensation.

Improve ventilation

  • Open windows for at least 15 minutes twice a day - opening more than one helps airflow.
  • Keep curtains open for 4 - 5 hours each day to allow air movement around windows.
  • Leave space between furniture and cold or external walls.
  • Don’t overfill wardrobes and cupboards - they need air circulation to stay dry.

Heat your home effectively

  • Use low-level heating over longer periods to avoid cold surfaces where condensation forms.
  • Heat your home regularly during colder months - don’t let it get too cold for too long.
  • Use dry sources of heat like gas central heating, storage heaters, or electric heaters.
  • Make sure your home is properly insulated to retain heat and reduce energy bills.
  • Draught-proof where possible to keep heat in.
  • Check that your loft insulation is at least 270mm thick and covers the whole loft - this helps prevent mould forming on ceilings.
