Dealing with mould

Mould on walls should be dealt with quickly to prevent damage to your home and belongings.

Cleaning mould can be hazardous so wear protective gear (mask, gloves and goggles) to avoid contact with spores and cleaning products. Also, don't brush mould as this releases spores.

Here are safe and effective ways to clean it:

Use white vinegar

  • Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle
  • Spray directly onto the mouldy area
  • Leave it to sit for at least an hour
  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth
  • Dry the area thoroughly

Use baking soda and water

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 cups of warm water in a spray bottle
  • Shake well and spray onto the mould
  • Scrub the area gently with a soft brush or cloth
  • Rinse with clean water and spray again lightly to prevent regrowth
  • Wipe dry

Combine vinegar and baking soda (for stubborn mould)

  • Spray vinegar first and leave for 30–60 minutes
  • Then apply the baking soda solution and scrub
  • Rinse and dry the area well

Use tea tree oil (natural option)

  • Mix 3 - 4 drops of tea tree oil with 2 litres of water
  • Apply with a spray bottle or cloth
  • Always test a small hidden area first to check for staining
  • Wipe clean and dry

For washable or non-porous surfaces

  • Use a commercial mould or mildew remover (fungicide)
  • Always wear gloves and a mask, and follow the product instructions carefully
  • Open windows or use ventilation while cleaning

Important

  • After cleaning, consider redecorating with fungicidal paint to prevent mould returning. Avoid standard paint, which won’t stop mould regrowth.
  • Never paint over untreated mould - it will come back.
