A local business is celebrating the successful launch of a sustainable gardening product thanks to support from our Rural Grants Funding programme.
Kateland Flock, a local producer of sheep wool products in Blithbury, has used the funding to invest in specialist machinery that transforms raw wool into nutrient-rich garden pellets which is a natural alternative to synthetic fertilisers.
Lichfield District Council provided a grant of £17,500 from money allocated through the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) which focuses on providing vital funding for innovation and long term resilience of businesses in rural areas.
Katie Stanley, Owner of Kateland Flock said:
“It’s been a learning curve, because this type of pellet production is still quite rare but we’ve had fantastic support from the machine suppliers and are really happy with the final result. The wool pellets are now officially launched and packaged in 2.5, 5, and 10 litre tubs.”
The wool pellets, which are slow-releasing, water-retaining, and completely organic, are already gaining traction. Kateland Flock has summer shows lined up to promote the product and has secured a retail agreement with a local plant nursery where the pellets will be available in the coming weeks.
To accompany the launch, Kateland Flock has also developed a dedicated website showcasing the product and the story behind it: www.katelandflock.co.uk
Councillor Richard Holland, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for High Street and Economic Development, said:
“This is a brilliant example of how our Rural Grants Funding is supporting innovative, sustainable local businesses. We're proud to be investing in projects that not only help the local economy thrive but also promote environmentally-friendly practices.”
