Enhancements to Christian Fields
While not all funding is in place, a strong community-led strategy will help attract investment and deliver improvements over time.
What we're doing so far
We've already started work on enhancing Christian Fields including:
Restored staircases
The first step in revitalising Christian Fields was restoring the stairs linking the various levels. With funding secured through Lichfield District Council and UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) support, we’ve now restored the stairs between the upper levels and hope to restore the lower stairs later in 2026, subject to funding.
Enhanced parking and access
Thanks to Lichfield City Council the parking and access at the lower car park has been enhanced. Alongside local community groups, we also hope to enhance the underpass mural linking the leisure centre to Christian Fields and explore lighting and pathway upgrades to create a brighter, safer, and more inviting route, subject to funding.
Enhanced accessible pathway to the lower field
Improving access for disabled people is a key priority. We've cleared the the existing pathway to the lower level of Christian Fields to make it more accessible to people of all abilities, including wheelchair users. Longer term we hope the path surfacing will be enhanced to ensure safe, easy use throughout the year, subject to funding.
Rewilded nature reserve areas
We’re working to rewild nearby areas along Eastern Avenue across Curborough Road from the new Stychbrook leisure centre, introducing new habitats, plant species, and natural features that support local wildlife. These greener spaces will not only enhance biodiversity but also create more opportunities for people to connect with nature in and around Christian Fields - whether through play, relaxation, or community-led activities that celebrate the area’s growing wild character - find out more at www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/minireserves
Inclusive outdoor learning, play, and volunteering
Working with Liberty Jamboree, we’ll create an inclusive outdoor learning and play space at Christian Fields. Our aim will be to create a welcoming environment where children and young people, especially those with special educational needs and disabilities, can learn, play, and connect with nature alongside families and the wider community. Plans include natural play features, sensory trails, planting areas, sheltered learning spaces, and a small gathering area. We will also develop intergenerational volunteering opportunities to build skills, confidence, belonging, and long-term care of this valued green space.
What we hope to do
Thanks to your views, we now have a range of projects we are hoping to deliver, subject to funding. These include:
Enhanced entrance
The current entrance is not as welcoming or accessible as we’d like it to be - we want to enhance the main entry point, so it feels open and inviting for everyone, including people using wheelchairs, mobility aids, and pushchairs - creating a welcoming gateway to health, recreation, and nature, subject to funding.
Enhanced signage
Signage is a small detail that makes a big difference. We plan to restore interpretation boards that guide visitors, celebrate local wildlife, and tell the story of Christian Fields, subject to funding.
Create a dog zone
We are considering whether Christian Fields could be a suitable location for a new dog zone, providing a safe, enclosed space for dogs to play off-lead. If taken forward, it could be designed with fencing that blends into the landscape and might include agility equipment, seating and waste facilities, subject to funding.
Introduce a beacon
As one of the highest points in Lichfield, we are considering working with a local artist to create a unique Beacon that could be lit during celebrations and special events, perhaps surrounded by a green labyrinth. This is still at an early stage and would require fundraising to make it possible, subject to funding.
Improve the boardwalk area
Over the years, we’ve tried several times to establish a pond in the boardwalk area, but it has consistently dried up. We are now exploring alternative options to enhance the space, such as creating a rain garden, with the aim of attracting more birds, amphibians and native plants, and supporting community learning opportunities, subject to funding.
The Green Flag Award
Our planned improvements support the aim of achieving Green Flag Award status, recognising Christian Fields as a well-managed, sustainable, and community-led green space that everyone can enjoy. We'll be applying for Green Flag in early 2027.
