Alarm and security systems

Alarm systems not only alert you to unauthorised entry but also act as a powerful deterrent to potential intruders. Their presence alone can significantly reduce the likelihood of a break-in.

Key security tips

  • Burglar alarms – Install a reliable burglar alarm system that covers all key entry points, including doors, windows, and garages. Choose a system with a loud internal and external siren to alert neighbours and scare off intruders.
  • Smart alarm systems – Modern smart systems offer real-time alerts, remote monitoring via smartphone, and integration with other smart home devices (like lights, cameras, and locks). These systems let you check on your home from anywhere and respond quickly to any unusual activity.
  • Visible alarm boxes – Displaying alarm boxes in prominent places (e.g. front of house, above door frames) makes it obvious your home is protected. This can often be enough to put burglars off.
  • Regular testing and maintenance – Test your system monthly and replace batteries where needed. If monitored, ensure your provider has your current contact details.
  • Be wary of WI-FI only alarm systems - these can be jammed or blocked. We recommend choosing a system that operates on an encrypted frequency (such as 868MHz) specifically designed for alarm communication and resilience.

When selecting an alarm company, we recommend you do your research and choose a company that has good local and national reviews based on the quality of work and responsiveness. Membership schemes like National Security Inspectorate (NSI) and/or the Security Systems & Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) can also help selecting a company.
