Sheds, tools and bins

It’s easy to overlook your shed or garden storage when thinking about home security, but for burglars, it can be a treasure chest of tools they can use against you.

That’s why securing your shed and outdoor space is just as important as locking your front door.

Lock up tools and ladders

  • Unsecured tools like hammers, crowbars, or screwdrivers can help a thief break into your home.
  • Ladders left out make it easy for someone to access upper windows or balconies.
  • Always lock tools away and chain or store ladders securely.
  • We recommend a closed-shackle padlock or locks rated by Sold Secure or similar.
  • Tools should be marked (e.g., with UV pen or SmartWater) and photographed. This not only deters theft but also helps with recovery and insurance claims.

Keep your shed locked

  • Even if you think there's nothing valuable inside, a shed can give burglars what they need to get into your home, or a neighbour’s.
  • We recommend a closed-shackle padlock or locks rated by Sold Secure or similar.
  • Consider installing motion-activated solar lights or basic shed alarms which are affordable and effective.
  • For high-value items like bicycles, we recommend that are secured inside the shed using a fixed anchor as well, rather than relying on the door lock alone.

Wheelie bins

  • Bins might seem harmless, but placed too close to fences or flat roofs, they act as stepping stools.
  • Keep them in a locked area or away from fences and garden walls.

Think like a burglar

Walk around your garden and ask yourself - if I were trying to break in, what could help me? Then make it harder. The more obstacles in a burglar’s way, the less likely they are to target your home.
