Due to ongoing snowy conditions and icy surfaces, today’s waste and recycling collections have been cancelled. Many roads are unpassable and unsafe, and it is not possible for our crews to operate safely.

Although some main roads have been gritted, our crews work primarily on smaller residential streets, which are extremely snowy and slippery. Our refuse collection vehicles are very heavy and carry large loads, and our crews must also manoeuvre heavy bins on foot. With surfaces difficult to assess, there is a high risk of vehicles skidding, crews slipping or falling, or other vehicles sliding into our teams.

The safety of our crews and residents must come first.

We have made every effort this week to recover collections lost due to snowfall earlier in the week. However, each missed day means we must try to catch up on around 16,000 missed bins, while also attempting to carry out that day’s scheduled collections. This has extremely challenging, particularly as we had to deal with very full bins due following the Christmas period. This meant we filled our wagons more quickly than usual and had to go to the tip more frequently, which slowed our crews down. We also prioritised black bins, as we know people are most keen to dispose of non-recyclable waste.

We will assess conditions again later today and tomorrow to see whether it is safe to resume collections and begin catching up over the weekend, so please leave your bin out and we'll update our website as soon as we can.

If you need to dispose of waste urgently and it is safe to travel, you may wish to use the household recycling centre over the weekend - we recognise this is not ideal and are very sorry for inconvenience.

Please continue to check our website for updates, including a list of areas we have not been able to collect from.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We are sorry for the disruption and assure you we have done everything we can in very difficult conditions.

We are in contact with all known rough sleepers in the district to encourage them into accommodation during the current weather conditions, as part of our severe weather emergency protocol, which is now active. If you are concerned about a rough sleeper who you feel needs help, please call us on 01543 308000 or outside of office hours call 01527 406643. Find out more about our severe weather protocol.
