Food business guide

Training, advice and guidance

All food handlers must be trained so that they have enough knowledge of food safety to do their job properly and protect the food from contamination.

Training for jobs that have low levels of food handling can be done in house (by the manager or supervisor), but those in a skilled or supervisory role must have a formal qualification in food hygiene.

The Level 2 Food Safety Award is the recognised level of training for anyone working in catering. This course gives candidates a background knowledge of the basic principles of good food hygiene and gives successful candidates a nationally recognised qualification.

There are lots of providers who offer certificates in food safety, including South Staffordshire College which has a campus in Lichfield District.

If you need any advice on structural requirements for food businesses, food handling, training or the current laws concerning food, we are happy to help. We offer free thirty-minute phone consultations, Monday - Friday, 2pm - 5pm.
