Register of HMOs

Owners/managers of a house in multiple occupation (HMO) that is rented out to five or more people, who form two or more families, and who share facilities such as a bathroom, kitchen, sink or toilet, must have a valid HMO licence.

Licences cannot be transferred to another property, or to a different person. If circumstances change, owners/managers will need a new licence.

It is the landlord's responsibility to apply for an HMO licence, and to wait for its approval, before letting out the property to five or more people, who form more than one family. Find out more about how to apply for a licence

Failure to get a licence could result in a fixed penalty notice (fine) of up to £30,000.

We publish a register of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in the district. If you are thinking of moving into a house in multiple occupation in the district, make sure it is registered first or contact us to see if an application has been received and is being processed.
