Bringing our heathlands back to life
We're restoring rare heathland habitats at Pipehill Crossroads, Ironstone Heath and Muckley Corner to create more space for nature and wildlife across Lichfield District.
Heathland is one of the UK's rarest and most threatened habitats. Without careful management, it can gradually become overgrown with scrub and young trees, leaving less space for the specialist plants and wildlife that depend on it.
Our restoration work involves carefully clearing overgrown areas, managing invasive plants and encouraging native heathland species to recover.
At Pipehill, around 0.6 hectares of heathland have already been recovered, with surviving heathland plants discovered across the site. Further work is planned at all three locations, with around 6.2 hectares of heathland and associated habitats earmarked for recovery and restoration over the coming years.
This work forms part of our Lichfield District 2050 Strategy and our ambition to improve habitats and support nature recovery across the district.
