Annual canvass
Each year, we check that the electoral register is correct. This is called the annual canvass.
We may contact homes in the district to check who lives there and who should be registered to vote. We then update the electoral register, which is published every year on 1 December.
What you need to do
If we need to check your details, we’ll contact you either by email or letter. Please read this carefully and reply as soon as you can. Tell us if someone has moved in or out, or if any details are wrong.
If the details are right, you can confirm this by following the instructions in your email or letter.
If you don’t respond when needed, you risk being removed from the register. If you’re not registered, you will not be able to vote and your credit score may be affected.
Opting out of the open register
You can choose to opt out of the open register. This means your details won’t be sold to people or organisations who buy a copy of it. To opt out, or to ask us a question, email elections@lichfielddc.gov.uk or call 01543 308125.
Young people can register before they turn 18
If you are 16 or 17, you may be able to register to vote now. This means you will be ready to vote when you are old enough, which is usually at 18.
Registering early helps make sure you do not miss out when you can vote for the first time.

If you don’t have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate before the deadline.
