Street naming and numbering

We name new streets and number/name new properties in the district.

We pass addresses onto the police, fire and ambulance services, as well as Royal Mail and other delivery companies. Our database is also used by credit agencies, satellite navigation systems and many private companies.

You are legally obliged to display your house number and/or name.

If you have just moved into a new property on a large development and your address is not recognised - for example by your utility company - we recommend you visit Royal Mail's postcode finder and enter your street name and house number.

  • If you find your address/postcode, your property is live on Royal Mail's address database and you should be able to use this with any companies you are dealing with.
  • If you can't find your address/postcode, it's probably because it has not yet gone live on Royal Mail's database. To request Royal Mail makes your property live, call 0345 606 6854 (chose option three, then option one) to let them know you have moved in. Royal Mail will then publish your new address on their website within 48 hours.

If you are building a new development or creating a new property you must apply for a new address from us - otherwise it won't be an official address and won't be recognised by other organisations such as the Royal Mail. Find out how in this section.
