Before you apply, we always recommend you check whether you need planning permission first.

The best way to apply for permission is through the government's Planning Portal which is designed to help you complete an application and create a professional quality site location plan by downloading appropriate Ordnance Survey maps.

You can save your application as you go, so you don't need to complete it in one go.

The Planning Portal site even calculates the correct fees for you and allows you to pay online.

Once you've submitted your application, it then goes into a five stage process

What to submit with your application

For an application to be valid and registered, you will need to meet both national and local validation requirements. It is important to ensure your application is supported by complete information from the outset in order that it can be fully understood and assessed, and to minimise the risk of delays.

National Validation Requirements can be found here: National Validation Requirements

Local Validation Requirements can be found here: Local Validation Guidance

Further information and helpful documents can be found here: Guidance Notes
