Why is this happening?

Food waste makes up a significant amount of everyone’s black bin waste (about half).

Unless you compost at home, your food waste goes into your black bin and is sent to an energy from waste plant where it is incinerated (or burned).

Whilst incineration is better than landfill, food waste can be recycled in a much more sustainable way.

Separating food waste allows it to be:

  • Recycled into renewable energy more efficiently
  • Turned into fertiliser for farming
  • Managed in a way that reduces environmental impact
  • Processed through a dedicated system designed specifically for food waste

This service brings our community into line with national recycling requirements and supports a more sustainable waste system

This is a UK-wide change, not a local decision. It forms part of the Government’s plans to reduce landfill, cut carbon emissions and improve recycling across the country.
