Council tax

Welcome to our Council Tax and Finance Section.

Lichfield District Council collects Council Tax in the Lichfield District. The money collected is used to help provide the services run by Staffordshire County Council, Staffordshire Police Authority, Staffordshire Fire Authority, local parish councils and us.

The amount of Council Tax set depends on how much certain public bodies in your area spend and how much they get from elsewhere. The amount you have to pay also depends on which valuation band your home is placed in.

A table of Council Tax charges 2008-2009 by Parish is now available to download in PDF Format or you can use our handy Council Tax Calculator.

This year (2008/09) Lichfield District Council will receive £134 per average household (band 'D') towards providing our services. This will represent a third of our total revenue expenditure, with the rest of the money we spend coming from Government Grants, Trading income and council savings.

If you are a business, and are looking for information about Business Rates, visit our Business Rates section.

Who can get a discount on their Council Tax?

Discount.

The full Council Tax bill assumes there are two adults living in your home. If only one adult lives in a property (as their main home), the Council Tax bill will be reduced by a quarter (25%). If a property is no-one's main home, the bill will be reduced by a half (50%). This can apply to empty properties and second homes.

Banding appeal. How can I appeal against my banding?

Property values are based upon values as at 1 April 1991 - recent selling prices are therefore not necessarily the best evidence. Since 1 December 1993 there are only a few occasions when taxpayers can challenge their banding.
