Council tax discounts and reliefs

If your circumstances change in a way that affects a council tax discount or exemption you are receiving, please let us know as soon as possible.

Council tax discounts and exemptions are awarded based on the information you give us when you apply. This could include reductions such as:

  • Single person discount – for households where only one adult lives at the property.
  • Carer discount, disabled person discounts or other exemptions – where someone in your household qualifies under specific criteria.

If you no longer qualify for a discount or exemption because your situation has changed, you must report that change promptly. For example:

  • Someone who was living on their own is now living with another adult.
  • A discount was claimed but now more adults live in the property.
  • Someone in your household who qualified for a specific disregard or exemption has moved out or no longer meets the criteria

If you continue to receive a discount or exemption that you are no longer entitled to, it could result in an incorrect council tax bill and you may have to pay any underpaid amounts. In some cases, failing to tell us about a change could lead to penalties.
