Key facts:
We investigate air pollution, such as smells, fumes and dust. If you would like to report a smoke issue, please fill in our smoke complaint form.
If you are worried you can smell gas please call the National Gas Emergency service immediately on 0800 111 999. They operate 24 hours a day, 52 weeks a year. If you are able to access the meter, turn it off. Don’t use electrical switches or naked flames and keep people away from the area.
About dust from building sites
Dust can be a major issue during construction work, and the planning permission for larger sites often sets out what developers need to do to limit dust. If we receive a complaint about a building site we will check they are complying with their planning permission. We will also visit and discuss dust control measures with the builder, such as water suppression and road sweeping. We can only take enforcement action if a builder does not comply.
About farm/farmyard odours
The use of/spreading of manure and other fertilisers on farmland is a standard agricultural practice and causes odour. We are only likely to investigate complaints relating to agricultural smells if they are particularly excessive or prolonged. We will also check the farmer is adopting relevant codes of practice.
Domestic/household smells fumes and dust
We have limited powers to investigate fumes and dust from domestic properties, however, we are able to deal with certain causes of smells at domestic properties, such as an accumulation of waste. To make a complaint about smoke from a domestic bonfire, please fill in our smoke complaint form.
Logging the issue
This form asks for your agreement to take part in logging the issue. Once you submit your form, we will provide you with a log sheet. This will help us assess the scale of the issue and the impact on your life. If you do not submit the log sheets, after a period of one calendar month, we will assume the issue is not ongoing and we will close your case
Anonymous complaints
We are sorry but we cannot take anonymous complaints because we cannot take enforcement action without assessing the impacts of the problem on your life/business.
