Am I eligible for social housing?

If you are homeless or at risk of being made homeless within the next 56 days, visit our homelessness section.

If you are not homeless or at risk of homelessness but would like to register for social housing, please be aware that there are very limited social homes to rent within Lichfield District.

Because of this, our housing allocations scheme gives priority to applicants with the greatest housing need.

Not everyone is eligible to join the register.

Your eligibility will depend on your circumstances. To qualify, you must:

  • Have a recognised housing need (for example you are homeless or threatened with homelessness, your home is too big or too small for your family, you cannot afford your current home, or you have medical needs requiring more suitable accommodation).
  • Be on a lower income (we will assess this through an income and expenditure assessment).

If you do not meet these criteria, you will not be eligible to join the register.

If you are eligible you will be given a priority banding and will be able to bid on properties on the Lichfield District Homes register. Your priority banding will affect how your bids on properties are shortlisted.

Use our quick checker to see if you could be eligible:

Do any of the above apply to you?

We are sorry but it is unlikely you will be eligible for social housing based on the answers you have given. Why not find out about private rented accommodation or about housing associations that let homes direct in the district?

If you have housing related debt, we recommend you contact your current or previous landlord and put a payment plan in place to work towards clearing the debt. The citizens advice team can also help you if you need support to do this. Find out more.
